When there are a lot of tasks to work on the tendency is to start working on them without putting any thought into how realistic it is to complete the various tasks that are being worked on. That is why it is equally as important to not take on more than you can realistically do as it is to manage the time that you have.
Anyone that is familiar with running understands that the approach that is used to run a marathon is not the same approach that should be used to run a sprint. A marathon is a longer distance which requires pacing oneself in order to endure to the end. Whereas a sprint requires short bursts of energy to get to the finish line first. The same is true when working on different tasks. There are different methods that should be used to manage the time that is required to complete them. If this is not taken into consideration you may fail to reach the goals that you set for yourself and that others set for you.
