Paralegals unlike attorneys do not have a mandatory set of ethical guidelines that they must adhere to, but are only guided by the ethical standards of their employers, paralegal associations, and/or their personal ethics. This can often result in a mismatch between an attorney's ethical obligations to clients and what is being delivered. All professions have a set of ethical standards that those that practice within the profession must adhere to. Doctors have them, attorneys have them, and accountants have Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). In order for paralegals to solidify themselves as a distinct and necessary profession they too must follow a set of ethical standards and the Generally Accepted Paralegal Principles are able to assist by providing a universal set of standards for all paralegals.
