Paralegal Power Breaks are short information packed sessions that provide useful career information to paralegals at all career levels. It is important to understand why metadata is so important for legal professionals. Metadata reveals a lot about what you do and how you do it. Data is at the heart of eDiscovery and data forensics. This data is more than tangible work product like documents, pictures, and emails.
Metadata includes the information that a device stores including when a picture was taken, what device was used to take a picture, and so much more. eDiscovery and data forensic professionals use metadata to obtain information, but these are not the only professionals that need to be aware of metadata. Paralegals most be informed about what it is and how it is used. For example, if a document is created and sent to opposing counsel the metadata can reveal a lot more than intended.
There are tools that can remove this information from documents prior to them being sent. For example, Adobe Acrobat has a redaction feature as well as a feature that can be used to remove hidden data from a document. This feature can be a huge assistance not only for removing private information like social security numbers, account numbers, and other private information prior to documents being filed with court, but can also be used to remove metadata prior to sending it to other parties involved in a case.
The following topics will be covered in this short information packed session:
